Entebbe Town
With a population of 90,500, the majority of Entebbe's residents
are civil servants for government ministries. Others make their
livelihood through agriculture, fishing, producing consumer
goods, or through small-scale industry. The primary languages
are English and Lugandan. Entebbe is 21 miles from Kampala,
the capitol of Uganda, and on the shore of Lake Victoria, the
second largest fresh water lake in Africa.
Entebbe has the status of a game sanctuary, and main attractions
include the Ugandan Wildlife Education Center, the Botanical
Gardens, and beaches along Lake Victoria. Residents of Entebbe

that development happen
in a sustainable way.
Stephen Kabuye, Mayor of Entebbe, says of Entebbe that: "It
is still one of the cleanest and [most] environmentally friendly
places to be Uganda, because of firm decisions and laws which
have over the years protected its flora and fauna .... [We are]
challenged with the task of transforming this ... town into
a yet more modern place, ... without defacing the look of the
town ... [or] it being polluted by modern life styles."
Entebbe is administered by the Municipal Council
and an elected Mayor (also a council member). The District Service
Committee appoints the Town Clerk, who is the chief administrative
executive and city accounting officer. Entebbe
also hosts Uganda's International Airport and the Official
Residence of Uganda's President -- as well as two 5-star hotels,
a sports ground, and a library. There are seven newspapers,
six FM radio stations, and five television stations available
in Entebbe.
Elementary school children attend one of Entebbe's 12 private
schools or 18 private schools. There are three private secondary
schools, three vocational schools, and a community college
for teachers.
In addition, there are many clubs, associations,
and NGOs that provide activities for children, work on community
issues, and deliver services.Entebbe
has a sister city relationship with Dorset County in the UK
for exchanges between teachers and children.Entebbe
means "seat" and received its name from the rocky
seats where Mugula, a chief of the Ganda people, would hold
court and adjudicate cases.
