Popularly known as "Entebbe Zoo", was opened in 1952,
by the Colonial Govt in Uganda, as a reception centre for wild
animals that were found as casualties (sick, injured, orphaned,
confiscated from illegal trade etc). In the early 1960s, it
changed its role to a certain extent assuming the role of a
traditional zoo and became commonly known as ''Entebbe Zoo".
During that period, a number of non-indegenous species, including
bears and tigers, were kept as an attraction. In May 1994, the
UWEC Trust was founded in order to take over the zoo and to
develop it primarily for Conservation Education purposes. Due
to its unique position as the only captive wild animals' collection
centre in the country, UWEC serves four |

roles:
a conservation education institution, its major mandate
a rescue and rehabilitation centre,
a captive breeding unit for threatened species,
a zoo where people merely come to see the animals The
Centre's location on the edge of Lake Victoria, its rich vegetation
and its surprisingly wide range of birds, butterflies and
other indegenous animals make it an attractive venue for education
as well as pleasing for those who visit, whether Ugandans
or people from overseas. |
